May: Shading and Highlighting!

Movin' on!!!!

May: a deep dive into shadows and highlighting!!

This past week I travelled to see my daughter's senior gallery show at Rhode Island School of Design. I did not get a lot of sketching done, but my heart is happy and the rest from sketching felt nice.

Is it ok to take a break from sketching???

I think so ---I enjoy sketching. I love looking at a new challege and finding ways to break it down into smaller building blocks. I love bringing characters to life.

I ALSO love road trips, and sunshine and taking lots of pictures for sketching later. I love finding colors and sunlight dappling on freshly bloomed flowers. I like LIVING in between all that sketching :-)

So, the sketching didn't happen this week - but I am refreshed and ready to dive back in- with LOTS of ideas from the 1,444,5666,000,988 pictures I took :-)

My break refreshed and encouraged me, it left me THIRSTY to start sketching again - and I think THAT is a healthy break :-)

This month we will dive deep into highlighting and shading ---remember that THIS is where your work will come to life and POP off the page. Stay in the midtones and your work stays in the mediocre zone....COMMAND light and shadow and your work vibrates with life!!!

This week on TWITCH we will look at creating textures through shading and highlighting.
Without further ado - our daily challenges for this week :-)

This week 4/28-5/5- one sketch a day::

Day 1: "Radish Light Study" - Analyze the interaction of light and shadow on a group of radishes. Observe how light affects their red exteriors and the resulting shadow formations.

Day 2: "Lettuce Sunlight Analysis" - Capture the sunlit leaves of lettuce, exploring their translucency and subtle light variations.

Day 3: "Garlic Lighting Examination" - Depict a garlic bulb, noting how light falls on its papery skin and creates highlights and shadows. Focus on texture and volume portrayal.

Day 4: "Bell Pepper Light Exploration" - Illustrate bell peppers, emphasizing how light interacts with their glossy surfaces. Experiment with reflections and highlights to convey their vibrant colors.

Day 5: "Spinach Light Observation" - Sketch spinach leaves, observing how they catch light and cast shadows. Explore leaf texture and movement.

Day 6: "Green Beans Light Analysis" - Draw green beans, focusing on light distribution across their smooth surfaces. Experiment with shading techniques for texture portrayal.

Day 7: "Tomato Light Assessment" - Render ripe tomatoes, noting how light illuminates their glossy skins and enhances their colors. Experiment with light and shadow effects for depth.
